A lesson learned
I bound off on the first STR sock today. Though I had tried it on a few rows into the leg pattern, I didn't realize how the fit would be affected by finishing the rest of the leg. I can hardly get it on. The cables on the leg have reduced the stretch to almost nothing.
I also have a lovely example of how gauge affects patterning of hand-painted yarns:
The foot is done on size 0 needles, and a little ways up the leg, I switched to size 1. Very clearly, the 0's pool, and the 1's stripe. I prefer the stripes, but the pooly parts are going to be in my shoes anyway, and the fit is nice and snug, so I wouldn't want to go up a needle size there.
I've set the poor sock aside for now, but when I'm feeling fortified, I'll rip it back to the start of the leg and rework it on size 2's so I can actually get them on and off. No idea what the yarn will do on size 2's yet :)
Off to work on the Clover Shawl for a bit instead.

Sorry you have to rip it out! I just cast on last night and I'm debating if I want to do the kit pattern or not - I'm leaning towards doing a different pattern. The photo is really interesting though, a good illustration of the effect of gauge.
I am actually happy that I ended up getting my kit later than others. The posts with Q&A and some of the tips have been worth it. Especially since I have a very small kids size foot but not too narrow.
I will be keeping up with how things go!
Are you a tight knitter?
Hey Veronica,
I'm a little on the loose side mostly, though I've been making an effort on these socks to be tighter than I prefer, since I don't want to go down smaller than a size 0. I think with that compensation I could be considered "average"..probably still not "tight"
Hey, found you through Harlot. Love the gauge difference. I did mine on 2's (pix on blog) different pattern. Sorry about the frogging but they sure look good. ps I think we started blogs about the same time. Were you inspired by everyone else through the club too?
Hey Laura, When I started the club I could tell my knitting posts were going to get out of hand on my personal journal (on livejournal), so I made this knitting journal to spare all the poor people over there, since most of my friends there aren't knitters.
